SUMMARY:Public lecture with Mercator Fellow Kaisa Kuurne: „When Life Happens“
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is open for interested people from the scientific community. \nIn her talk\, she will examine ways in which unfamiliar or unanticipated moments become transformative and intertwine in our lives and the making of belonging. By ‘transformative moments’ she refers to events which rupture or stand out of the ordinary in personal lives (e.g. birth\, death and illness) or collective lives (e.g. 9/11\, war\, covid-19 and political conflict) and overturn our lives and relations. Drawing on different multi-sited ethnographic studies on transformative moments on one hand in urban neighborhoods in Helsinki and NYC\, and on the other\, in Finnish health care and community settings\, the talk discusses how unanticipated moments of life may be consequential for belonging\, revealing its unexpected frailty and emergence. \n  \nAbout the lecturer: \nKaisa Kuurne is an university lecturer in Sociology at the University of Turku & University of Helsinki. Her research foci include reproductive politics\, birth and care practices as well as belonging\, social bonds and community\, family\, friendship\, intimacy and urban sociology (more information here: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/kkuurne/in-english/).

SUMMARY:Public lecture with Prof. Stephen Billett: "Negotiating Learning & Development Across the (Adult) Lifespan"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is open for interested people from the scientific community. \nThis event explores how individual progress across the lifespan is shaped by both societal structures and personal negotiations\, focusing on the transitions from childhood to old age. Building on work life history research that highlights the importance of community networks in supporting these transitions\, this lecture elaborates concepts such as the “personal curriculum” (i.e. the pathway of experiences individuals have across their lives) (Billett 2023a) and a broader consideration the kinds of “educative experiences” that comprise processes of guidance and support\, yet in ways that sit outside of the orthodoxy of what is often captured as lifelong education (Billett 2023b). Central here is the duality between what is afforded individuals by societal practices and suggestions\, broadly captured through the concept of social affordances (i.e. invitations to participate)\, on the one hand\, and how individuals can come to engage with what is afforded them. Yet\, these are only one means by which those negotiations\, and that learning\, and development can be understood. Consequently\, the discussion following the lecture will elaborate on approaches adopted by colleagues at the Goethe University of Frankfurt so that the diverse perspectives and adopted by researchers interested in the life course can better be understood. \nAbout the lecturer: \nProf. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Stephen Billett is Professor of Adult and Vocational Education\, Griffith University\, Brisbane\, and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. Following an earlier work life in garment manufacturing\, he has worked as a vocational educator\, educational administrator\, teacher educator\, professional development practitioner and in policy development in the Australian vocational education system and as a teacher/researcher at Griffith University. Since 1992\, he has researched learning through and for work and published widely in fields of learning of occupations\, workplace learning\, work and conceptual accounts of learning for vocational purposes. He was awarded a Fulbright scholar\, National Teaching Fellow\, recipient of honorary doctorates from Jyvaskala University (Finland) and University of Geneva (Switzerland)\, and elected Fellow Academy of Social Sciences of Australia.

SUMMARY:Public lecture with Mercator Fellow Tannistha Samanta: „State\, Family\, and Embodiment: An Aging Society in Transition“
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is open for interested people from the scientific community. \nIn her talk\, Mercator Fellow Prof. Tannistha Samanta (FLAME University in Pune/India) will draw on data from survey-based empirical and phenomenological studies to show how moral-cultural scripts govern the paradoxical realities of growing old in post-reform India. Specifically\, this talk will focus on the intersecting axes of class\, sociality and consumption to argue how middle-class older Indians navigate changes\, continuities\, and precarities of ambivalent modernity. Overall\, the talk is intended to generate critical discussions on the neoliberal promise of the ‘good (later) life’ while reflecting on the complexities and contradictions embedded in transitions. \nAbout the lecturer: \nTannistha Samanta is an Associate Professor with the Department of Social Sciences\, FLAME University\, Pune\, India. Her research focuses on the nexus of health and aging in India\, examining questions related to intergenerational relationships\, place-making\, social capital\, older adult sexualities and theory development in aging. In another line of inquiry\, she examines the sexual and reproductive health of women through the intersecting lens of the body and the market. Tannistha serves on several journal editorial boards including Anthropology & Aging\, The Sociological Review (SAGE) and the Journal of Aging Studies (Elsevier). Originally from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta)\, Tannistha received her graduate-level degrees (Masters and PhD) from the Department of Sociology\, University of Maryland\, College Park.

SUMMARY:Workshop zur Analyse qualitativer Daten mit Dr.in Sarah Weber

SUMMARY:Workshop mit Mercator Fellow Kenneth Horvath "Reflexivität als Herausforderung und Ressource"
