DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Doing Transitions International Conference will address “Relational Perspectives on the Life Course” and aims at bringing together the Doing Transitions research group with other researchers concerned with conducting research on life course transitions in a reflexive and relational perspective. The concept of relationality will be discussed in terms of different theoretical dimensions and methodological aspects of transitions across the life course. We are looking forward to exiting lectures and keynotes e.g. from Daniela Grunow (Goethe-University)\, Eric Widmer (University of Geneva)\, Silke van Dyk (University of Jena) and Rick A. Im GRK-internen Workshop werden Wege ausgelotet\, mit diesen Anforderungen produktiv umzugehen und – darüber hinaus – Reflexivität als Ressource zur Gestaltung stimmiger und produktiver Forschung zu fassen.  \nIn einem ersten Schritt werden dazu zentrale Entwicklungslinien der Debatte um reflexive Methodologien nachgezeichnet und der spezifische Blickwinkel konturiert\, der sich aus einer pragmatischen „Soziologie der Kritik“ auf Logiken und Praktiken sozialwissenschaftlicher Wissensproduktion ergibt. In einem zweiten Schritt wird anhand der Projekte der Teilnehmenden besprochen\, wie dieser spezifische Blickwinkel handfest „praktisch“ werden kann\, indem er hilft\, Aufgaben und Schwierigkeiten des Forschungsalltags einzuordnen und die eigene Forschung (wissenschaftlich\, moralisch\, politisch…) zu profilieren und zu positionieren.

DESCRIPTION:Konzepte von “Talent” und “Potenzial” (bzw. von “Begabung”) spielen für die politische und pädagogische Gestaltung von Bildungsübergängen eine Schlüsselrolle. Inspiriert von der “Soziologie der Kritik” (Boltanski 2010) entwirft der Vortrag von Kenneth Horvath (Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich)\, der im Wintersemester 2022/2023 als Mercator Fellow zu Gast im Graduiertenkolleg ist\, eine neopragmatische Perspektive auf Logiken und Praktiken der Prüfung von “Begabung” in ihrer Verwobenheit mit gesellschaftlichen Wissens- und Herrschaftsordnungen. Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira (University of Lisbon) will focuse the following topic: \nRecently\, Bourdieu’s sociological approach has been renewed in a critical way by Bernard Lahire to Bourdieu’s approach. The intention of the seminar is to make an incursion into Lahire’s criticism of Bourdieu to introduce the methodology of sociological portraits as an important resource for research on an individual scale and in the biographical tradition. After presenting the basic properties attributed to individual dispositions (variability\, genesis\, transferability\, dichotomy and contextuality)\, the potentialities of sociological portraits for the purposes of social science research are underlined.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe workshop is only for members of the research training group. Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira (University of Lisbon) will focuse the following topic: \nIn a context of social\, theoretical\, and methodological profusion\, how is the reliability of data\, particularly data of a qualitative nature – be it narrative\, observational\, or visual\, among others -\, is thought and guaranteed. I advance the arguments that the reliability of qualitative data is guaranteed\, above all\, by criteria of methodological\, positional\, and ethical reflexivity of the researcher throughout his or her research path. This means that the reliability of the data is not associated with a supposed status of neutrality guaranteed by the method\, but\, on the contrary\, to the objectification with rigor by the researcher him/herself of the conditions of social production of these results and analyses which he reached\, identifying and justifying the various options and decisions which he took in the course of action underlying the research process. Thus\, the discussion on these issues has to be part of the writing process of any methodological chapter.

SUMMARY:Workshop with Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira "Precarious transitions and new “dream jobs” among young people"
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe workshop is only for members of the research training group. Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira (University of Lisbon) will focuse the following topic: \nCurrently\, young people are compelled to deal with the insecurity and polyvalence that increasingly punctuate their transitions from school to work\, sometimes feeling some dissatisfaction with the more normative configurations of that paths. A virtuous relationship between type and level of education\, profession\, salary\, and social status is no longer taken for granted. A degree no longer guarantees access and progression in a specific career\, or even a job corresponding to the qualification obtained. And this is a reality that young people and their families are increasingly aware of. In many cases\, this set of conditions leads young people to seek alternative pathways to the official routes between school\, training\, and work. In the current context of disbelief that an academic degree fulfills dreams of stability\, employment\, and social mobility\, academic promises compete with promises mediated by other social contexts\, such as youth cultures and celebrity cultures. Against this background\, the operationalization of the concept of “playbor” (Törhönen\, et al.\, 2020) is of extreme heuristic value to empirically and analytically explore the integration of two traditions in youth studies that live relatively apart: the youth cultures and the youth transitions approaches.

SUMMARY:Public lecture with Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira "Enduring youth: neoliberal turn\, youth policies and transitional impasses to adulthood"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is open for interested people from the scientific community. Mercator Fellow Vitor Sèrgio Ferreira (University of Lisbon) will focuse the following topic: \nFor a long time\, youth studies have been analysing and theorizing a supposed prolongation of the youth condition in the life course\, based on the premises of: 1) the constant postponement of the traditional transition markers to adulthood (entry into the world of work\, leaving the parental home\, entry into conjugality and parenthood); and of the existence of a principle of reversibility in the youth experience of these markers – the so-called yô-yô transitions or even yô-yô generation. Socially and symbolically\, the time of being young lasts longer and longer. Are we in fact witnessing a constant change\, and in the same direction\, of the transition to adulthood\, or are we facing an adult life in transition? Certain discomfort is beginning to be felt among some people in being continuously qualified as young\, considering the impasses that this qualification produces in their life transitions. We propose looking at this phenomenon by analysing the value of an enduring youth condition in a society that is turning to neoliberalism\, and the impacts that the most recent public policies for youth in Europe may have in this process.

SUMMARY:Öffentliches Werkstattgespräch „Biographie und Übergang“ mit Prof.in Dr.in Bettina Dausien
DESCRIPTION:  \nIm Kontext der Übergangsforschung wird häufig auf biographietheoretische Methodologien zurückgegriffen. Ausgehend von Lebenslaufuntersuchungen in der Tradition der Chicagoer Schule wurden biographietheoretische Methoden in den letzten Jahrzehnten ausgearbeitet\, kritisiert und weiterentwickelt. Auch in der Übergangsforschung wird regelmäßig auf “Biographie” zurückgegriffen – als Quelle\, Erhebungsmethode oder theoretische Perspektive. \nBettina Dausiens narrationstheoretisch fundierter Ansatz einer sozialkonstruktivistisch orientierten Biographieforschung verbindet hierbei wie kaum ein anderer Zugang die Analyse biographischer Prozessstrukturen mit der Rekonstruktion der sozialen Positionierungen\, an die sie gebunden sind. Ihr Ansatz\, der wesentlich anhand der lebensgeschichtlichen Dimension des ‚Geschlecht-Werdens‘ ausgearbeitet wurde\, nimmt Gesellschaft als objektive und subjektive Wirklichkeit in den Blick. \nDas Werkstattgespräch setzt sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit dem Verhältnis von Biographie- und Übergangsforschung auseinander. Ausgehend von den Arbeiten von Bettina Dausien soll die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Gesellschaft und Individuum in der Biographieforschung diskutiert werden. DESCRIPTION:Seit den Anfängen der Biographieforschung in Deutschland gilt die gemeinsame Interpretation empirischer Daten in einer Forschungswerkstatt als Qualitätsstandard. Im Gegensatz zur ‚einsamen Arbeit‘ am Schreibtisch geht es darum\, in einer kooperativen Praxis voneinander zu lernen. Es wird davon ausgegangen\, dass nicht eine bzw. ‚die richtige‘ Interpretation Gültigkeit beansprucht\, sondern unterschiedliche mehr oder minder plausible ‚Lesarten‘ am empirischen Material entwickelt werden können. Die Interpretationsarbeit wird durch eine fragende Haltung bestimmt\, die auf eine Erkundung von Unbekanntem abzielt und neue theoretische Einsichten gewinnen möchte. \nDiskutiert werden in der GRK-internen Forschungswerkstatt drei Vorlagen mit empirischem Material aus Forschungsprojekten\, die im Kontext des Graduiertenkollegs ‚Doing Transitions‘ angesiedelt sind. Am Ende der Forschungswerkstatt besteht Gelegenheit für weitergehende Fragen zur Biographieforschung.

Pierce) vorstellen und diskutieren möchten. \nGlen H. Elder gilt als Pionier der Lebensverlaufsforschung. SUMMARY:Workshop Empirische Subjektivierungsforschung mit Prof. Dr. Boris Traue
DESCRIPTION:Die Subjektivierungsforschung verbindet gesellschafts- und sozialtheoretische Reflektionen moderner Selbst- und Weltverhältnisse mit empirischen Analysen zur Wechselwirkung von Subjekten sowie Institutionen\, Normen und kulturellen sowie ökonomischen Ordnungen. Mit dem Begriff der Subjektivierung werden drei zentrale Fragen aufgeworfen: Wie bringen Gesellschaften Subjekte hervor? Wie beziehen sich Subjekte mit Hilfe von Sprachen\, Institutionen\, Diskursen\, Techniken\, Artefakten und Bildern aufeinander? Wie wirken sie gemeinsam auf subjektivierende Ordnungen zurück? \nIm Workshop mit Prof. Dr. Boris Traue\, Soziologe und Professor für Soziale Arbeit an der Université du Luxembourg\, werden zunächst theoretische Rahmungen im Feld der Subjektivierungsforschung vorgestellt: Sie speist sich aus der Lebenslauf- und Biographieforschung\, der Sozialisationsforschung\, kulturtheoretischen und machtanalytischen sowie konflikttheoretischen Ansätzen. Weiterhin werden methodische Positionen und Strategien mit ihren interdisziplinären Bezügen und ihren Gütekriterien diskutiert. Endlich sind zeitdiagnostische Aspekte für die Subjektivierungsforschung bedeutsam. Neuere gesellschaftliche\, technologische\, politische und militärische Ereignisse und Entwicklungen als Hintergrund für die Subjektivierungsforschung sollen im Workshop ebenfalls zur Sprache kommen. Der Workshop bietet die Gelegenheit\, anhand der Analyse von Daten die Vorgehensweise von Subjektivierungsanalysen kennenzulernen.

Ziel ist es\, Varianten der Darstellung von Empirie kennenzulernen und Eingrenzungen bezogen auf die eigene Forschungsarbeit zu besprechen. Zugrunde liegt die Annahme\, dass die geplante Darstellung der Empirie in den individuellen Forschungsarbeiten der Kollegiat*innen bereits im vorherigen Arbeitsprozess Entscheidungen notwendig macht.

At both universities\, Tübingen and Frankfurt\, interested colleagues are invited to seminars introducing into the main research objectives and perspectives of this second half of the programme. Under the title “Analysing transitions in the life course from a relational perspective”\, he outlines what it means to re-frame the Doing Transitions approach as relational. This includes highlighting the benefits of a relational perspective for transition research and introducing three dimensions which will be of major concern for Doing Transitions in the next period: temporalities\, materialities and social relations. \nThis introduction will be followed by two keynote lectures held by Dr. Melanie Lovatt and Dr. Kerstin Meißner – Mercator Fellows within the Research Training Group during the current winter term. They will contribute their perspectives on temporality and relationality during the life course with two guest lectures. \n“Future matters: transitions and temporalities during the life course”: Dr. Melanie Lovatt discusses temporal identities and inequalities during the life course. She considers how our orientations towards the future might change as we age\, how social groups can be temporally included in\, or excluded from\, the future\, and why thinking temporally matters more than ever during a time of climate emergency and the COVID-19 pandemic. \n“Bildung als Beziehungsweise(n) – centering relationality and dependency in educational practices”: Dr. Kerstin Meißner discusses how shifting away from autonomy as an educational goal and the “imperial odyssey of the self” (Mischke 2013\, S. 324) within social science can ground new perspectives for educational theory-building and research. By centering dependency and relationality she asks how these concepts can help to disrupt the violent individualisation that is re-produced within educational systems and open ways of engaging in a decolonial and ethical more-than-human materiality.
