Settersten (Oregon State University) ein\, die ihr Buch „Living on the Edge. An American Generation’s Journey through the Twentieth Century” (zusammen mit Lisa D. Pierce) vorstellen und diskutieren möchten. \nGlen H. Elder gilt als Pionier der Lebensverlaufsforschung. SUMMARY:Workshop Empirische Subjektivierungsforschung mit Prof. Dr. Boris Traue
DESCRIPTION:Die Subjektivierungsforschung verbindet gesellschafts- und sozialtheoretische Reflektionen moderner Selbst- und Weltverhältnisse mit empirischen Analysen zur Wechselwirkung von Subjekten sowie Institutionen\, Normen und kulturellen sowie ökonomischen Ordnungen. Mit dem Begriff der Subjektivierung werden drei zentrale Fragen aufgeworfen: Wie bringen Gesellschaften Subjekte hervor? Wie beziehen sich Subjekte mit Hilfe von Sprachen\, Institutionen\, Diskursen\, Techniken\, Artefakten und Bildern aufeinander? Wie wirken sie gemeinsam auf subjektivierende Ordnungen zurück? \nIm Workshop mit Prof. Dr. Boris Traue\, Soziologe und Professor für Soziale Arbeit an der Université du Luxembourg\, werden zunächst theoretische Rahmungen im Feld der Subjektivierungsforschung vorgestellt: Sie speist sich aus der Lebenslauf- und Biographieforschung\, der Sozialisationsforschung\, kulturtheoretischen und machtanalytischen sowie konflikttheoretischen Ansätzen. Weiterhin werden methodische Positionen und Strategien mit ihren interdisziplinären Bezügen und ihren Gütekriterien diskutiert. Endlich sind zeitdiagnostische Aspekte für die Subjektivierungsforschung bedeutsam. Neuere gesellschaftliche\, technologische\, politische und militärische Ereignisse und Entwicklungen als Hintergrund für die Subjektivierungsforschung sollen im Workshop ebenfalls zur Sprache kommen. Der Workshop bietet die Gelegenheit\, anhand der Analyse von Daten die Vorgehensweise von Subjektivierungsanalysen kennenzulernen.

Neben einem einführenden Input wollen wir uns in Kleingruppen mit Forschungsarbeiten aus dem Feld der Übergangsforschung auseinandersetzen. Ziel ist es\, Varianten der Darstellung von Empirie kennenzulernen und Eingrenzungen bezogen auf die eigene Forschungsarbeit zu besprechen. Zugrunde liegt die Annahme\, dass die geplante Darstellung der Empirie in den individuellen Forschungsarbeiten der Kollegiat*innen bereits im vorherigen Arbeitsprozess Entscheidungen notwendig macht.

This includes highlighting the benefits of a relational perspective for transition research and introducing three dimensions which will be of major concern for Doing Transitions in the next period: temporalities\, materialities and social relations. \nThis introduction will be followed by two keynote lectures held by Dr. Melanie Lovatt and Dr. Kerstin Meißner – Mercator Fellows within the Research Training Group during the current winter term. They will contribute their perspectives on temporality and relationality during the life course with two guest lectures. \n“Future matters: transitions and temporalities during the life course”: Dr. Melanie Lovatt discusses temporal identities and inequalities during the life course. She considers how our orientations towards the future might change as we age\, how social groups can be temporally included in\, or excluded from\, the future\, and why thinking temporally matters more than ever during a time of climate emergency and the COVID-19 pandemic. \n“Bildung als Beziehungsweise(n) – centering relationality and dependency in educational practices”: Dr. Kerstin Meißner discusses how shifting away from autonomy as an educational goal and the “imperial odyssey of the self” (Mischke 2013\, S. 324) within social science can ground new perspectives for educational theory-building and research. By centering dependency and relationality she asks how these concepts can help to disrupt the violent individualisation that is re-produced within educational systems and open ways of engaging in a decolonial and ethical more-than-human materiality.

Dazu werden einige Kollegiat*innen ihre Forschungsprojekte vorstellen und in der Gruppe eigene Materialitätskonzeptionen und deren Abbildung im empirischen Material diskutieren.

DESCRIPTION:Der Gleichstellungsrat des Graduiertenkollegs lädt im Mai Katharina Mader\, Ökonomin und Assistenzprofessorin am Institut für Institutionelle und Heterodoxe Ökonomie der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien\, ein\, um über Fragen von Vereinbarkeit von Fürsorge- und Pflegearbeit und wissenschaftlicher Karriere zu diskutieren. Vor dem Hintergrund der Corona-Pandemie wirft die Überlagerung von Care-Arbeit und wissenschaftlicher Arbeit neue Herausforderungen auf – auch in der eigenen Wissenschaftsbiographie. Unter dem Titel “Care und wissenschaftliche Arbeit – Herausforderungen der Corona-Pandemie” wollen wir im niederschwelligen Setting eines Kamingesprächs die Rahmenbedingungen reflektieren\, in denen wir aktuell Wissenschaft vor dem Hintergrund verschiedener (vergeschlechtlichter) Care-Verpflichtungen betreiben. \nDer Gastvortrag findet digital und in Kollegs-internem Rahmen statt.

DESCRIPTION:Flyer Guest Lecture with Theodore R. Schatzki May 11th\n\nOn May 11th the Cooperative Research Group Doing Transitions is hosting a guest lecture with Prof. Theodore R. Schatzki (University of Kentucky/Lancaster University) on the topic of “The Trajectory of One’s Life: A Practice Approach”. \nThe lecture draws on theories of practices to analyze trajectories of a life of three sorts: space-time paths\, sequences of action\, and omnipresent significative arcs from past to future.  After exploring the peregrination of lives through bundles of practices and material arrangements\, it concludes by differentiating life trajectories from chains of activity\, which are responsible for changes in social life.  Arrays of life trajectories and of activity chains intersect\, and they ink\, pass through\, and are coeval with practice-arrangement bundles. \nThe lecture is public and will take place via Zoom. Schließlich sind auch die besonderen Arbeits- und Forschungsbedingungen während der Corona-Pandemie ein Thema\, die unseren Kolleg in einer Umbruchphase\, dem Beginn einer neuen Kohorte von Promovierenden im Januar 2020\, herausgefordert und zur Umsetzung neuer Methoden geführt hat.

SUMMARY:International Conference ‚Doing Transitions in the Life Course. Discourses\, Practices\, Institutions\, Subjects'
DESCRIPTION:Conference programme (pdf)\n\nTransition research has developed and diversified across different disciplines\, epistemological interests and approaches as well as research methodologies. Many studies conceive of transitions as linear steps in the life course from one stage to another. They share the understanding that success means mastering these challenges and thus offer an individualised view of transitions. The relationship\, however\, is not so straightforward. Transitions are processes with ups and downs\, loops and circles\, steps forward and back that result from interactions between various actors. ‘Doing Transitions’ accordingly means to conceive of transitions as emerging from the interplay between discursive\, institutional\, and individual practices.\n\nSince 2017\, the Research Training Group\, ‘Doing Transitions’\, funded by the German Research Association (DFG)\, has been working on a deeper understanding of how transitions emerge across the life course. Early career researchers work on research questions such as: How do individuals\, institutions\, and discourses contribute to the formation of transition? What is the meaning of time\, space\, and bodies in this process? How are difference and inequality reproduced in the formation of life course transitions?\n\nThe aim of this conference is to present the Research Training Group’s affiliated projects and to discuss them with international scholars in the field and thereby develop new ideas and perspectives for research on the processing of transitions.
