After her studies, she worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Empirical Social Research at the University of Siegen and as a research associate at the Institute for General Medicine at the Frankfurt University Hospital. She is currently a research associate at the Chair of Medical Sociology at the Institute for Medical Sociology, Health Services Research, and Rehabilitation Science (IMVR) at the University of Cologne. Tamara Schwertel has taught sociology, educational sciences, health services research, and medicine at universities in Cologne, Frankfurt, Mainz, Munich, Vienna, and Innsbruck. During her doctoral studies, she completed a research stay at the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society at the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently working as a Digital Visiting Scholar at the Usher Institute of the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on the application of qualitative methods, particularly reconstructive approaches, grounded theory, and situational analysis, as well as health sociology and medical sociology, and science and technology studies.

Dissertation Project

The dissertation project examines deep brain stimulation therapy from a social science perspective and aims to research the current developments, discourses, and practices surrounding DBS. A sociotechnical approach is pursued, focusing on non-human actors as well. Attention is given to the various networks and elements involved in the therapy, such as medications, the condition itself, and the DBS (significant materialities), patient organizations, different groups of involved physicians, medical staff, conventions, standards, and effective discourses. The study is based on a qualitative situational analysis design.

Talks

2024

Schwertel, T., & Morsello, B.
