Previously, she studied human geography, sociology, political science and gender studies in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Mankato Minnesota, Frankfurt am Main as well as in Mexico City and graduated with a Master of Human Geography (M.A.).
During her studies she completed the certificate program Women’s and Gender Studies of the Cornelia Goethe Center. From 2018 to 2021, she was involved in a total of three research projects on gendered violence and women’s shelters at the Department of Social Work and Health at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. Since 2022, she has been a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Sociology at Goethe University. Stella Schäfer’s research focuses on violence in gender relations, intersectionality and transition research.

Phd project

Paths of women affected by violence – an intersectional analysis of gender-based violence

The dissertation project deals with transitions in the life course of women* affected by violence. The focus is on the shaping of transitions of women* affected by violence within the structure of violence in domestic territories and social power relations. The concept of domestic violence emphasizes the spatial aspect of private space. Since for many women* affected by violence not only private households are space in the experience of violence. The project extends the perspective of domestic territories as spaces with a sense of intimacy and control.
By means of an intersectional perspectivization through map-based, problem-centered interviews, the question will be explored how subjectivation processes take shape in the transition of addressing violence and what opportunities and hurdles women* affected by violence encounter. It is planned to conduct 10 interviews with women* affected by violence.
The aim of the work is to draw theoretical conclusions on the connections between social structures and domestic violence.

Curriculum vitae

since 2/2023

Associate member Doing Transitions

10/2022-2/2023

Cornelia Goethe Colloquium Theorizing Gender(ed) Violence.
